Vitalist Preview #3: Quick Add/Edit
March 15th, 2007 / 18 Comments

Ok, time for the new feature that I am most excited about. In the next update to Vitalist, we will be adding what I refer to as “quick edit.”

The “quick edit” will now allow you to double click on your desired action, and instantly allow you to edit the item. No more loading of a new page is needed. You will have all of the most important fields available, and if you need to view/edit more information you will still have the detail screen available.

Here is a screenshot of the quick edit in action (click to enlarge):

Quick Add/Edit

We have also re-tooled the “quick add.” Every list will now have this available, which should greatly speed up the entering of data.

So far I can tell you that the “quick add/edit” has greatly increased my efficiency when using Vitalist. Hopefully everyone will enjoy this feature.

If you haven’t already, make sure to check out Vitalist Preview #1: Contexts as Tags and Vitalist Preview #2: Sub Projects.

And again, stay tuned for more previews coming up.

Quick Add features is going to make me switch to vitalist. Very Nice Job Here.

I have a suggestion for vitalist, which is better integration with google personalized homepage, I wanted to be able add/edit on my homepage.

One place that this would be very, very useful is on the project page. Actually, this is the way I’d implement this:

    1. Sort projects by the number of actions assigned, so I can easily tell which project needs a next action.
    2. have a quick add button next to each project name, so I can add another action to that project quickly.

This would really make weekly reviews a breeze….

Sounds fantastic — when can we expect this update?

  • From Justin on March 21st, 2007

Anything that will let me add items without using the mouse would be fantastic. All the fields are great for setting specific options, but I’m a command-line kind of guy. I’d prefer something that lets me tab between two or three fields and type everything (using the mouse only if necessary).

Any update on when? I’m on the verge of switching from Remember the Milk to Vitalist, but am waiting on a few of these usability features – RTM is just so much faster, but Vitalist is more geared toward the way I work and like to look at my work.

Barring any unforeseen problems, we are expecting to release this update sometime next weekend.

[...] Too much page reloading, overreliance on tabbing between dropdown fields to input information, and not enough inline editing. Vitalist promises this will change soon, which will rock. [...]

[...] This weekend, Vitalist added more functionality to their service. They added the ability to create subprojects, make contexts as tags, quick add/edit and even added priorities. The improvements are great in that they add some elbow room in using the system. They did, however, get something wrong that is important to people who adhere to the GTD system. They removed the ability to sort by context and by project. That’s like having a Corvette with a lawnmower engine. They took out the heart of the GTD system and put in Priorities. [...]

Feature Request – High: Guys, why can’t we see the existing notes when we Quick Edit? I keep adding notes to things that already have notes, simply because I can’t see the old notes. While I greatly prefer the old editable style of notes, I’m trying to live in the new world but not being able to see the old notes is an important need. Please?

Feature Request – High: Guys, I have one more important request. On the Quick Add, we need to be able to add the Context. Otherwise, there is a lot of time wasted looking for the new Action to assign a context to it. Realistically, Quick Add is not useful for those that are context-driven — it is much more practical to click New Action. That is too bad since Quick Add is in such a prominent place on the screen that it would be great to be able to use it effectively. Please?
