Vitalist Preview #2: Sub Projects
March 14th, 2007 / 15 Comments
Another feature we are adding in our next update to Vitalist is Sub Projects. Many of you have requested this, and we have listened. You will have the ability to add up to two sub levels, and as always you will be able to add unlimited projects.
Actually, projects will play a much more central role in Vitalist. You will now have a ‘My Projects’ link right in your navigation menu, instead of having them stuck away in your settings.
Here is a screenshot of the sub projects in action (click to enlarge):
Another thing you may notice is the ability to complete projects. Once you complete projects, they will be removed from your lists just like completed actions do. You also have the ability to add Due Dates to projects, as well as choose in what order they will appear.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out Vitalist Preview #1: Contexts as Tags.
And again, stay tuned for more previews coming up.

The sub-projects will be more than welcome and now eagerly anticipated. Any time frame indication on when this feature will be rolled out?
Thank you for the regular upgrades. I have been an RTM user for some time, but prefer vitalist.

I’m curious if repeated actions will be refined in the new version. I am unsure how they work, as I don’t ever see the new repeated action show up once I complete a current one. I hope this will be another area that you will focus on.
Great work though!!!

@EK
Yes, we will be updating recurring actions in the new version. We will be adding another option to repeat tasks, which should clear up any confusion, and make them more powerful. We will have a preview on that as well.

I love this project. I’ve just started using it seriously and I find it very easy to use.
I’m excited to see the new updates for sub-projects. I was wondering if you think you might institute the 40,000 ft view from GTD as well. I want to track longer term goals and use projects to keep myself moving in the right direction.
When is the expected release date for the new version?

Perfect! Just like I asked for! Now, go do my dishes! ;P

[...] Sub Projects will work very well with how I like to do things. Currently I tend to prefix every project with a company name abbreviation to help categorize and order them. This will, if nothing else, make things look better -and- give me a lot more flexibility with how I arrange stuff. [...]

I am really looking forward to being able to add subprojects. So far I’ve been using vitalist as my next actions list, but managing my projects with lists on a spreadsheet. It is going to be great to be able to put all that info into Vitalist.

[...] Sub-Projects – While many of the GTD purists might be wondering how this is beneficial, I think this will be a very slick addition to Vitalist. Imagine being able to input your latest mind-map into Vitalist as a single project? No longer will you have 20 different projects that deal with your upcoming move or bedroom remodel – now they can all sit comfortably under the same heading, where you can more easily track their progress in relation to the overall project. An awesome feature, indeed! [...]

You guys are on top of things. Yet another feature I wanted to see. Can’t wait for the next version!

[...] If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting! The Vitalist folks said they’d have the new features out by the end of March, and they did just that. Barely! New and improved features were rolled out earlier today (this afternoon I think?). This update includes many new features and enhancements. To read about the major changes, please see the past few articles on this blog: Contexts as Tags, Sub-Projects, Quick Add/Edit, and Priority. We think you will find that these features make Vitalist both more powerful and more adaptable to different productivity styles. [...]

Hi,
your new version seems really promising. After some testing I do have a few questions though:
1/ sub-projects: if I get your screenshot allright on Neteffect the subproject should be displayed too when filtering on the parent project. Well it’s not the case for me.
2/ drag and drop: I found this a really cool ability of vitalist as my daily priorities might fluctuate quickly and I find a drag and drop easier than playing with configurations like a combination of due date and priority settings. It does not work anymore and that’s bad…
I should add that I tried these two things on both Firefox 2.0.0.3 and IE and that I am very found of vitalist.
Keep it up

[...] This weekend, Vitalist added more functionality to their service. They added the ability to create subprojects, make contexts as tags, quick add/edit and even added priorities. The improvements are great in that they add some elbow room in using the system. They did, however, get something wrong that is important to people who adhere to the GTD system. They removed the ability to sort by context and by project. That’s like having a Corvette with a lawnmower engine. They took out the heart of the GTD system and put in Priorities. [...]
