Vitalist Now Supports Google Gadgets
February 6th, 2007 / 30 Comments

By popular demand, we are pleased to announce that Vitalist supports Google Gadgets that you can display on your Google Personalized Homepage. Now you can view any Vitalist list right along with your email, weather, and calendar.
To add a Vitalist gadget to your Google Personalized Homepage, just follow these quick and easy steps:
- Navigate to the desired Vitalist list, let’s say the Dashboard.
- Right-click the google link in the upper right hand corner and copy the url.
- Go to http://www.google.com/ig.
- Click Add stuff. This takes you to the content directory.
- Click Add by URL (next to the “Search Homepage Content” button).
- In the Add by URL text box, paste the URL copied in Step 2.
Hopefully everyone will enjoy this new feature. And as always, keep the suggestions coming. We love to hear from our users.

I was so happy to hear from you that you were integrating vitalist into google home page. I am still not getting the full list of to-dos that I want, i.e., RTM seems to pull all the to-dos out in a list. I will keep working on it from my end, and if I continue to have trouble, I’ll get back to you. I just thought you might want to have feedback as those of us who need it, begin to try it out to see how it is working. I am sure the technology is not so simple, so bravo for listening to us. I was glad others were ahead of me in this request.

Lynn,
I am glad you were excited about the new Google Gadgets feature. You were right, the list was cutting off short and not displaying all of the actions.
I have made an adjustment to the gadget which should make the list automatically grow to the correct size. Now I am not sure how often Google checks for updates, but on the next refresh you should see the changes.
Note: A quick way to force the change is to remove any gadgets you have added. Reset your Private URLs from your settings page, and then re-add your gadgets back to Google.
Hope this helps.

This is the feature I was expecting. I already added Vitalist to my Google homepage and it works fine.
Thanks very much.

I almost forgot a request: and what about an integration with Google Calendar?
From Robert on February 12th, 2007
A. Carranca
Currently, you can sync your actions with Google Calendar using our iCal export. Go here to read more about how to set it up. As far as further calendar integration, we have a few things we are working on for the future.

I would love a rich Google Gadget for my Google Desktop Sidebar. Any chance this will happen?
From justelise on February 13th, 2007
I am really looking forward for this to integrate into my Google Calendar. Once it does I’ll be able to get rid of Remember The Milk.

Google Gadget for the Google Desktop Sidebar would be awesome!!
From Rowena on February 14th, 2007
I really love the look of this application and I would love to use it, however I cannot get the actions to integrate into google calendar no matter what I do. I have tried the above steps.
How are the actions supposed to be displayed in gCal.???
It’s frustrating, as this is not working for me.
From Robert on February 14th, 2007
Rowena
Sorry to hear that the gCal integration is not working for you. The actions should be visible on their due date. Sometimes gCal takes a while to update calendar feeds so any recently added actions may not show up instantly.
From John on February 15th, 2007
I agree with Jedweb and David. I would love to have a Google sidebar gadget for Vitalist. I don’t use Google’s homepage, but the sidebar is a different story.
From Scott McReynolds on February 15th, 2007
I love your web interface. I would not change a thing there. There are two things I would love to see that would make this perfect for me.
1. iCal sync brings my actions in as untimed events rather than to-do’s. This clutters my calendar and does not allow me to view them in context when I sync to my palm. I’ve created separate calendars for each context in vitalist and this would make the palm sync portion perfect for me.
2. On Google home page: Allow items to be completed directly in the gadget.
Nice to have:
1. Integrate with Google calendar.
2. 2 way sync.
The only thing that really hurts at this point is the iCal sync not creating to-do’s so that I can separate the context. If I could complete items on Google’s home page then that would save time also, but I would still keep Vitalist as my GTD repository.
Great work so far!
Thanks,
Scott

What about a Netvibes module?
From TechTalk on February 16th, 2007
2nd to Fred and others – Netvibe module would be awesome, also google sidebar app would be too cool. And of course total integration with gcal is making me sweat just thinking about it already!!
I know I’m adding nothing new except to throw my .02 in – also to say thank you thank you for such a great concept so well realized! Keep up the good work.
From TechTalk on February 16th, 2007
@Fred – just wanted to tell you my ‘discovery’ that you can put the feeds from dashboard or inbox or whatever into netvibes so at least you’ll have info and feedback. Clicking the feed will of course direct you right into vitalist, and there’s no way to easily add from there, but that’s better than nothing for sure …

The integration is very clean. I like the ability to use this service in vitalist. Thank you for making this feature available.
From Jeff Ruday on February 18th, 2007
Will it ever be possible to create a New Action by sending an e-mail to Vitalist? Not suggesting adding e-mail as a feature, but only as an alternative to manually creating every new action. i.e. Many of my incoming e-mail end up in my current GTD system. As I understand Vitalist, you have to create every New Action from scratch. Other than this issue, your product is outstanding. Add the e-mail feature, and I am hooked! Good luck and Thanks. Jeff
From Matt on February 18th, 2007
Jeff, yes, this feature will soon be available on Vitalist. Thanks for trying out Vitalist!

[...] Speaking of nifty things to support, there’s Google Gadget support for pretty much all the views. Just click the little Google link to get the code and follow the simple instructions and you’re done. Maybe if we all ask nicely we could get something similar for Netvibes. To be fair though, it does offer feeds from every view, so integration with non-Google stuff should be reasonably easy. Just not interactive, of course. [...]

How do you move completed items to the Archive area?
From Jeff Ruday on February 19th, 2007
When a Tickler comes due and shows up on the Dashboard, can it be converted to a Next Action so that a context can be added to it?
From Matt on February 19th, 2007
Jeff,
Any items that are completed can be view in the Archives area. Think of the archives as more of a search.
Please direct any further questions to support@vitalist.com.
Thanks,
Matt

Neat! FYI, you can make it even easier for vitalist users to add the gadget, but simply offering a add-to-google button which adds gadgets instead of RSS feeds:

how about yahoo widget??
From Jedweb on February 22nd, 2007
@Adam Sah:
Is there an easy way to convert a Google gadget for the personal home page to a gadget for the Google sidebar?
From Brian on August 22nd, 2007
@hp:
Amen to that! I’d love to have a yahoo widget with my vitalist!
From Andrew Marcus on January 4th, 2008
I like the web layout, and VitaDesktop is pretty cool. But why isn’t there a way to interact with the list in the Google Gadget? For me, just viewing my list is not very useful if I can’t also add new actions and mark actions as complete. Some filtering options here might be nice also.

Does this work with IE7? I cannot Login. It works fine with Firefox 2.0.0.14. Thanks!

Regarding the Google Gadget for Vitalist: I cannot LogIn with IE version 7. Is this a known issue? Please advise.
