VitaDesktop = Quick Access to Your Vitalist Account
October 4th, 2007 / 21 Comments

VitaDesktopFor Windows users, you can now bypass your browser and access your Vitalist account directly from your desktop. It is called VitaDesktop and a big thanks goes to Michael Prendergast for creating it.

VitaDesktop is a little application that can reside in your system tray. This efficient app should only take up 1/5 to 1/3 of the resources that Internet Explorer or Firefox does. Just double-click on the icon in your tray and your Vitalist account pops up in one of three modes: compact (mobile), iphone, or full.

Read more on the VitaDesktop blog or go here for the download.

Note: There is no formal affiliation between Vitalist and VitaDesktop.

It’s not very good, is it? It looks like a mini-IE and doesn’t present a clear list or allow you to add quick items.

  2. Bob Crothers Posted on October 5th, 2007

You are looking at the compact list. Same as when you use your Treo/access via the .mobi websit.

As a Mac user, I wonder if there will be a Mac version?

  4. Chris W. Posted on October 6th, 2007

I use a mac too, so I can’t use it. That said, I think it’s pretty slick! I would definitely enjoy this type of quick-look functionality, versus having to keep a browser window dedicated to it. Nice job!

What a bunch of whiners! Michael has bothered to put together a quick app to use the API, made it available to for FREE, and all you babies can do is whine that it isn’t good enough for you.
Neil - you don’t like it? Tell you what - get your money back. Or, maybe, make some constructive suggestions for how Michael can improve it. Or, maybe, write your own.
Elizabeth, Chris - you want a Mac version? Why not write one yourselves?
    Sheez!

Michael - don’t be disheartened by these negatives. I think it’s a lovely little app, and it helps the VL experience a lot. Good for you for having the life and nous to do it.

Um … sorry if that came across a bit strong. Especially to Chris, who was praising it after all!

As someone who write occasional bits of freeware, I just get frustrated when people get negative about stuff that someone has bothered to write and has made available for free, when they can’t be bothered to do anuthing themselves.

Mac users: Wait until Leopard and use the Web Clip capability in Dashboard to create a widget either out of the iphone, mobi, or full version of the site.

    NickD:
I hear ya; I read this blog and am kinda surprised at how many people bash Vitalist or even it’s updates, especially since it’s such an excellent piece of (web) software. No offense taken.

    RobB:
Great idea; not having looked too much into the web clip functionality, I didn’t realize I could do that. Probably good for the developers here to know as well so they don’t go creating something like this for the Mac!

I do appreciate the work and it’d be great except… I can’t keep it under control! I’ve played with all the different Options but it flicks up, then minimises, then runs away, then flicks back… it’s a bit distracting. Not sure I’ll persist.

For mac users, I guess a Firefox plugin could be sweet too :)

This is the best “to do” list i have found and it is free! The negative comments are all user errors or lack of understanding by the users. I use it and it works on both Vista and 2003 Pro. I use the web version with my iPhone. Use the web version if have a Mac!

I love this website! I think it’s really cool that you can subcategorize projects under their parent projects. Thanks for putting this up. I’m glad I found it!

I use Firefox constantly anyway, so an idea of something you could do is BOOKMARK http://m.vitalist.com/ Then, put that bookmark on your bookmarks toolbar. Right-click on it and select “Open in Sidebar” — Then just click the bookmarklet. Boom! You have vitalist in your sidebar always.

I’d love to see a Mac native version as well!

Is there a way to search globally?
Is there a way to archive completed items automatically?
    Thanks.

A similar effect can be achieved by using Mozilla’s new app called “Prism” - http://labs.mozilla.com/2007/10/prism/

Michael - thanks for developing VitaDesktop - looks like a great little app. I hope someone with more skills and abilities than I have creates a mac version (Not whining - just wishing :-)

#14 - Awesome trick! I just set it up and that was quite nice. Took all of 15 seconds to set up too!

  20. Tijl Kindt Posted on November 27th, 2007

I love it! Really nice to be able to double click the icon in my system tray and immediately see my dashboard, being able to click it away with a simple click without having it somewhere in the forest of opened tabs in Firefox :D.

Is this an offline application? Will you be supporting Google Gears in Firefox any time soon?
