Context Groupings Are Back!
April 16th, 2007 / 31 Comments
The long awaited context groupings are now back in Vitalist. You will now see the option in the upper right hand corner of the screen, along with the project grouping option. Make sure to refresh/clear your cache to see the changes.

We have been working hard on this update and were able to release it much quicker than anticipated. Hopefully everyone will enjoy this feature.
Next up on our plate is adding back the drap-n-drop functionality, which we will be getting out to you as soon as possible. As always, if you have any support related questions, please email us at support@vitalist.com, do not post them in the comments.

Great contextual start to my week
Great addition. But I would like to suggest 2 things:
1)The links “group by context/project” should be in the top blue Action bar at the left, next to “sort by priority”. They are now at the upper right where
-they are confusingly close to the “settings/help” line of commands
-they need your mouse to travel a long distance.
They really feel like cousins of “sort by priority” and so should be next to each other at the left, at least as I’m feeling things.
2)If I want to switch from “group by context” to “group by project” I first have to remove the grouping by context, i.e. 2 clicks and twice waiting for the screen to refresh. To me it seems it would be natural to be able to switch from “group by context” to “group by project” in 1 click. When I’m looking at ‘grouped by context’ I would like to be able to click on the link “group by project” which, if necessary, could do itself first the ungrouping by context.
Just my 2 cents.
Great addition, and terrific response/quick implementation! Well Done!
Much appreciated. Thank you.
thanks for the hard work
This is great! Thank you so much!
love the feature’s return and you guys rock. thanks for listening. Paul;s suggested location of the “button” to look at context might be nice. I had to read the blog and intuitively didn’t find it without it.
Thanks very much. This will make it much easier for me to print the list and take with me. No more printing each context separately. Thank you!
Thank you so much for all your hard work. It is a great benefit to those of us who had set up our lists using the context function.
Keep up the good work.
This is great. You put the heart back into the whole thing. Thanks for the hard work.
[...] Vitalist has come through for their users and put the ability to sort your Next Actions by Context back into their web service. According to their recent post, it took them less time than they originally anticipated. Earlier than expected works fine for this user. [...]
Great to have this back. I abandoned Vitalist after an initial trial but the latest release and subsequent additional functionality are terrific.
Don’t know what the long-term product plans are but I’d like to have the ability to collect, link and tag all kinds of stuff to projects and actions. Some off-line capability may also be important.
Anyway…great work
Hi Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that I nominated Vitalist for the best Web 2.0 site(Productivity).
URL: http://www.webware.com/html/ww/100.html
Thanks for your excellent work!
[...] Online GTD project manager Vitalist has added a small feature over the weekend: context groupings. Now when viewing your inbox, actions, someday/maybes, etc, you can sort your tasks by project or context. Very nice. [...]
Very nice.
Suggestion: If you could simply sort the .MOBI site Actions list by CONTEXT I think it would at least make it immediately usable.

Thank you very much for the webware nomination.

We have just updated the .mobi app with context and project groupings. There is a “Group by Project” and “Group by Context” link at the bottom of the list pages.
I see “save and move to next” has been added to the Inbox.
This really speeds up processing the Inbox enormously.
The only problem is if the action is already completed, you don’t have a way to mark this. I imagine this would be easy enough to add. Otherwise, you’ve to go back to the list, find it, and mark it complete.
Quick to do but useful:
On Actions -> Group by Project page, make it possible to check project as complete, not only action.
Right now I use this page to see what actions are left in project, and I keep another window opened to mark projects as complete.
Bug Report:
I have “show completed items” set for 1 day.
On Actions -> By Project page, I see actions that were completed today crossed off, but projects that were completed today (& all of their actions) don’t appear. Please fix.
I agree with Paul Iliano. Going from “group by project” to “group by context” should need only one click instead of two (and one unnecessary full page reload).
Also please add a section “no project” to the projects groupings. That section should include all actions without a associated project. Likewise group-by-context should have a “no context” header.
This way I could see all my tasks in the group-view without having to jump back and forth to also see my actions without project/context.
Thanks.
Can the Mobile page context grouping have a unique address? I can’t bookmark actions by context because it defaults to the main action list. I then have to scroll through all of my actions to select “Group by Context”
Are anyone elses actions all messed up? Nothing is aligning correctly.
Sure would be nice to have a forum.
Corey, if you are having issues with Vitalist, please email us at support@vitalist.com. We will help you as soon as possible.
As far as the alignment goes, we just made a fix to help with this problem. You will need to refresh your browser or clear your cache to see the changes.
Corey,
Have you tried to bookmark
http://www.vitalist.mobi/list/actions/?gb=c
To get the ActionList by context?
For me, I assign this URL as a hotkey (G) on my Treo, and whenever I want to see my ActionList by Context I just holddown G and there it is. It’s quite nice.
Joe,
Works perfectly!! This is the kind of stuff a forum would be helpful for. Just to find out how other people are using Vitalist. Tips and tricks type stuff.
any hint on the ETA of drag and drop?
I second the request for a forum. Using an off-topic blog comment doesn’t ensure that people will look at your post. Thanks.
I third the suggestion for a forum. I suspect it would benefit everyone — users and developers.
The best forum software I have found to date (best meaning simple to install, feature-rich, stable, robust, secure, manageable, and easy to use) is the open-source package Simple Machines Forum, or SMF. Find it here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/
Actually they say it better than I do: “elegant, effective, powerful, free. it’s that simple.”
Whatever you choose, I do hope that you will soon upgrade this Net Effect blog & comment to a fully functioning forum! You could start with a simple set of boards: Announcements, Feature Requests, Bugs and Issues. Some place for all of us advocates to share usability tips and tricks would also be nice; maybe a How To board? Or you could set up a General Discussion board and run user polls for new boards!
As always, I look forward to seeing your next improvements.
Regards,
Daniel
+1 on a forum.
+1 on no off topics on Blog Comment–right after this one.
I will say that I like the context groupings but wantl also to have project views and not just all projects. It would be most efficient when creating projects to have it filtered for only that project.
Oh, yes. And a forum. Why? Because busy developers can then rely on users to answer questions, share ideas, usage methods and other such dialogues. Sending emails to support for a common newb question or feature request is not the best way. Often forum users can comment on another users’ feature request and say, “Yeah” or “Whoa, hold on a minute.”
Just another kudos on the great app.
I have a bunch of feature requests but will save them because I want to share them with the community.
Cheers,
Jay
