Access Vitalist on your IPhone
July 8th, 2007 / 44 Comments

Iphone Dashboard ScreenshotWe have heard requests from several users over the last week for an IPhone-enabled version of Vitalist. We have just pushed our first rendition at iphone.vitalist.com. This version is optimized for the IPhone’s large display and touchscreen interface.

A couple of things we plan on adding are grouping and sorting options in the next few days. If you have an IPhone, take a look at iphone.vitalist.com and let us know what you think.

Note: You can now group and filter actions by using the “G” and “F” icons at the top of the lists.

Fantastic that you would so quickly support the iPhone! I’ve only recently signed up for service, but have been very happy with what I’m paying for. The iphone interface is much easier to use than the mobile site I was using. If I could ask for a improvement it would be that there is an option to be brought directly into the Dashboard view. All in all - excellent work!

I’ve recently converted to vitalist after seeing your great mobile support, which already worked well on the iphone- This new iphone-specific design really takes it up a notch- It workes great on my phone. Great clean design, too!

  3. Conrad Barskii Posted on July 9th, 2007

    The new app is fast!

Looks like you are doing all the proper AJAXy things to let the app run fast on a slow network- it’s really speedy on my iPhone, even when compared to the already-fast mobile version of vitalist. Nice work!

  4. Brian Volpe Posted on July 9th, 2007

Awesome!! I love it! Very fast and functional.

  5. John Alessi Posted on July 9th, 2007

Fantastic! I just noticed that you can not add or view notes on the iPhone version. Will this be added soon?

  6. Mario Arroyo Posted on July 9th, 2007

Of all the competition you guys are the best. I have tried them all and keep coming back to Vitalist. The iPhone integration keeps putting the icing on the cake. Great Job!

  7. Matt Posted on July 9th, 2007

    @John,

We will be adding notes functionality soon.

  8. brandon Posted on July 9th, 2007

Very nice! PLEASE add context view — with that, you will have justified the purchase of my iPhone!

  9. Kelly Posted on July 9th, 2007

Love it — very cool. Just wish we could filter by context.

  10. Andrew Flusche Posted on July 9th, 2007

I must be a real geek. THIS is what makes me wish I had an iPhone. I can do without most everything else, but this mobile version is slick! I’ll just have to stick with standard…for now.

  11. Eric Posted on July 9th, 2007

This is phenomenal. Thanks for all of your work. Looks GREAT on the iPhone, and it’s speedy too.

  12. Mario Bottion Posted on July 10th, 2007

Great. I have the same comments as everyone: I keep going out and trying other solutions but at the end of the day Vitalist is far superior. Keep it going!

[...] All you new iPhone users may be glad to learn that one of the better GTD-style websites, Vitalist, has added a mobile version just for you. Vitalist made the announcement through their blog at The Net Effect. You can access Vitalist for iPhone at http://iphone.vitalist.com. [...]

  14. John Alessi Posted on July 10th, 2007

I noticed that the page size is about 120-130k mostly because of the .js libs. Accessing the interface over WiFi is great but the large page size really slows down the interface over an EDGE connection. The iphone browser does not seem to cache the .js libs, which would be a great solution. Maybe some of the libs, or something in them can be tossed?

wowsers - first time user and just got an iPhone on Sunday - learning quickly tho and having fun! I would like to see the pages go “full screen” as described in this post… no need to see the address bar at the top.

  17. Bill Posted on July 12th, 2007

Keep up the good work, it’s great to see you supporting the iPhone so quickly.

Now if only they would ditch that dumb exclusive deal with AT&T and come over to T-Mobile!

  18. Sona Posted on July 13th, 2007

    Brilliant - love it.

  19. Dan Posted on July 14th, 2007

Looks great! Is there any way to filter by context or project while on the iPhone? For instance, I only want items in my Calls context when I’m ready to make some calls.

  20. Martin Burger Posted on July 18th, 2007

Sorry, but I thought the IPhone’s browser is able to render regular web pages. So, why a special version for that browser? During the last years many complained about IE-only websites. And now? Nothing learned? (IMHO)

  21. Robert (Vitalist) Posted on July 18th, 2007

Yes, the iPhone does indeed render regular websites. The issue comes with the touchscreen interface, which sometimes makes manipulating small links, check-boxes, and other regular interface elements hard to do. This is why larger rows, links, and button images are used.

  22. Martin Burger Posted on July 18th, 2007

Should be fixed by Apple’s developers.

  23. Shawn Medero Posted on July 20th, 2007

It should also be pointed out that this works great on other mobile devices - like Nokia’s N800. (Which has full versions of Opera and Firefox available to use)

  24. mitch Posted on July 21st, 2007

Martin - normally, i’d agree that there should only be one interface, but until the iPhone supports Flash based rich internet applications (and hopefully desktop apps via AIR), then the iPhone interface to vitalist is not only needed but beats the socks off of other apps like it.

  25. John Alessi Posted on July 25th, 2007

I agree with Dan, there needs to be buttons on the front page for contexts and projects. When I am in the car, for example, I need to see a list of all my @errands quickly and easily.

Kudos Robert, this is by far the best GTD app out there - on any platform.

  26. Jeff Turner Posted on July 27th, 2007

Great job…. now if you could make phone numbers in notes or titles clickable as phone numbers, it would really rock.

  27. Michael Stiber Posted on July 28th, 2007

I’m a new Vitalist user, though an older GTD’er. I tried both the iPhone and generic mobile interface. For the former, I get the main screen, but when I tap on any element (Dashboard, Actions, etc.), I get “loading…”, but ofttimes nothing loads, even if I give it a few minutes. The strange thing is, if I access that URL via my desktop machine, it will “unstick” the iPhone. Is is possible that there is an issue with being logged in from multiple places?

The biggest issue, however, with both interfaces is the lack of “filter by context”. I have too many actions to make “sort by context” practical. And, according to good GTD practice, you don’t want to see actions that are outside the current context.

  28. Tim Matheny Posted on August 3rd, 2007

Great job on the grouping! Now could you add group or filter by date to your grouping by project and grouping by context?

  29. Anthony Graham Posted on August 7th, 2007

will SSL be available for login?

  30. Carsten Posted on August 15th, 2007

Very cool feature! How can i configure a smaller font?

  31. Mike Posted on August 29th, 2007

Can you add a “completed” button near the top of an action edit screen? The little checkbox at the bottom is difficult to get to.

  32. Jason Posted on October 13th, 2007

Is there a reason why I can’t view my projects on my iPhone? I only see my dash, inbox, actions, waiting, someday, ticklers and reference. Projects seems to be missing.

  33. Rob Posted on October 16th, 2007

Thanks for this great web app for the iPhone! Coming from using a Palm for several years, I have certain functions I expect to find in a PDA (like a to-do list of SOME kind!): in which the iPhone is lacking.

I was using Ta-da List, which was adequate, but Vitalist is a god-send for people like me who really use and rely on a more advanced “Planner-Style” to-do utility.

    Thanks again

  34. Torossian Posted on December 3rd, 2007

Vitalist looks amazing on my iPod Touch. Now I don’t even have to jailbreak it because all I wanted was a to-do list that wasn’t ugly/slow/crippled.

    Simply wonderful.

  35. Neanderthal Posted on December 3rd, 2007

Please add a way to see a list of projects on the iphone, also a way to order actions within projects. Other than that Vitalist is awesome!

  36. Eric Posted on December 9th, 2007

Tried this on my Windows Mobile Spring Mogul and Opera Mini…works wonderfully. You aren’t stuck with the iPHONE! 3g all the way!

  37. Brandon Posted on January 22nd, 2008

So when are you guys going to add a nice custom “web clip” icon. I want Vitalist to look sexy on my home screen.

  38. Fred Posted on March 28th, 2008

Let me dream for a bit… how about a native iPhone app that you can use offline (like on an airplane), integrated with the iPhone’s other apps like Calendar and Notes, and it syncs up to the site when back online?

  39. ken Posted on May 2nd, 2008

#38 / Fred. That’s what I’ve been begging for ever since I got my iPhone. I would gladly pay for that application.

  40. Andy Posted on May 22nd, 2008

I would pay too for such an application… @#38

  41. Tim Lemons Posted on July 10th, 2008

any news about a native app since the app store is out? I was bummed to not see a Vitalist app on there! Hook us up Vitalist!

  42. Robert (Vitalist) Posted on July 15th, 2008

We are currently examining our options with the iphone app store. In the short term, we would like to concentrate on finishing our next version of the web app.

A native iphone app, though, is likely something we will be working on in the future.

  43. Magnus von Koeller Posted on July 22nd, 2008

I have been using the web app for a little while now — and I must say that I do really like it. However, not having a native app is something that makes me consider switching at the moment. I’ll stay with the web app for the moment but having a native iPhone app would be a *huge* plus for me. So, just a shout out to you guys at Vitalist: we do want a native iPhone app. :)
